Presentation Title: Building ACCESS-able neuro-emergent healthcare in New Mexico
Presenter Name: Andrew L. Hollander PhD, MBA, PMP Senior Program Manager ACCESS Telemedicine Program Department of Neurosurgery University of New Mexico
Presentation Summary/Description (up to 5000 characters):
With 31 out of 33 counties in the New Mexico designated medically undeserved, patients with serious conditions, such as stroke or head trauma, entering emergency rooms across the state may find themselves on a helicopter to UNMH or a hospital out of state for care. Far from home. All to often, unnecessarily. This presentation deals with an attempt to positively impact this aspect of healthcare. This is the story of the inception, planning, implementation, and outcomes of the University of New Mexico Department of Neurosurgery program to bring neuro-emergent telemedicine services to New Mexico. What was the impact on rural hospitals, patients, and local communities? How did the program change cost and improve availability of healthcare in the state? What role did project management play in the success of the program? And, of course, what were lessons learned, and what will the future of the program be? The name of the program is ACCESS (Access to Critical Cerebral Emergency Support Services).
