Integration of Advanced Distributed Energy Resources

JonHawkins
The electric utility industry is seeing an unprecedented increase in distributed generation on a grid that has been designed based on centralized generation. Coupled with this challenge is that resources such as solar photovoltaics can be intermittent and limited to when the sun is shining. PNM is being proactive in its approach to trying to accommodate this new paradigm. PNM has embarked on two innovative projects in Albuquerque New Mexico, one in energy storage and the other a building microgrid project done in collaboration with a Japanese government organization, NEDO. A case study will be presented discussing the efforts, the results, and the logistics required to complete these two world class projects.

Jonathan Hawkins is the Manager of Advanced Technology and Strategy at PNM Resources, an energy holding company based in Albuquerque New Mexico. Jonathan’s team is responsible for research and development of new technologies and the proposal of possible business applications of emerging technologies in support of PNM Resources strategic objectives. Areas of responsibility include “smart grid” technologies and strategy, integration of distributed energy resources; plug in hybrid electric vehicles, and storage technologies.
Jonathan received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico in 1994. Jonathan currently sits on the Electric Power Research Institute’s (EPRI) Research Advisory Committee as well as research program advisor roles for EPRI; and is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
